Several legends explain how Ganesh broke his right tusk, which gives him the name of Ekadanta ” The Lord who has only one tusk ”

Legends of Ekdanta Ganapathi

The first legend (in the Brahmanda-Purana) is related to a battle between Ganesh and Parashurama. Parashurama was one of the Vishnu incarnations (avatara), born on earth to teach wisdom to the governing class, the Kshatriya , who had become arrogant and oppressed people. Parashurama meditated on Shiva and got the divine axe, Parashu. This axe helped him to fight against all the corrupted princes, inspired by devils.

Deeply grateful to Shiva, he went to Mount Kailash to bow to his guru. But Ganesh, who was guarding the entrance of the palace, did not allow him to proceed. Ganesh told him to wait for the Shiva permission.

Parashurama thought : ” I am a Shiva devotee, such a rule cannot be applied to me ” Ganesh persisting to bar the way, Parashurama, usually peppery, stroke violently the Ganesh tusk with his axe and broke it. Then Shiva and Parvati arrived and blamed Parashurama who bowed down before Ganesh and supplicated to obtain his forgiveness and blessing. Then Ganesh was named Ekadanta ” The Lord with one Tusk “.

According to another legend, Ganesh broke himself his tusk during the battle against Gajamukhasura (the elephant-headed Asura ). Taking the advice of Shukracharya, the Asura guru, this demon followed severe penances. Thus, he got unconquerable powers from Shiva. But he misused those powers to harass the gods who went to Ganesh and requested his help.

Ganesh did not hesitate to give battle to this demon. During the fight, he understood that the demon could not defeated, because of his particular powers. Then, Ganesh broke his right tusk and threw it to Gajamukhasura. He pursued him and converted him in a mouse. Then he rode this mouse, which he used as a mount, keeping it under control.

Another legend narrates that Ganesha was asked to scribe down the epic of Mahabharata, dictated to him by its author, sage Vyasa. Taking into note the enormity and significance of the task, Ganesha realized the inadequacy of any ordinary ‘pen’ to undertake the task. He thus broke one of his own tusks and made a pen out of it. The lesson offered here is that no sacrifice is big enough in the pursuit of knowledge.

"Agajaanana Padmaarkam, Gajaananam Aharnisham

Anekadantham Bhaktaanaam, Ekadantam Upaasmahey"

Meaning: I worship day and night that elephant faced Lord Ganesha who is like sun to the lotus face of Mother Parvati. Giver of many boons, the single tusked Ganesh, I salute Thee to give me a boon.

Anuradha Nakshatra - Ruled by Saturn

Anuradha Nakshatra in the Vimshottari Nakshatra Dasa (120 Year Cycle of Timing of Events) system introduced by Rishi Parashara is associated with planet Saturn. This association with Saturn is only relevant with the Vimshottari based Nakshatra Dasa system and Saturn doesn't rule this Nakshatra as is believed and understood misintepreted in many of the later texts on Nakshatras. The Nakshatras are ruled by the Devatas (Tutelary Archetypes or Principal Dieites). Other Nakshatra based dasa systems given by Rishis Parashara have been associated with other planets that influence this nakshatra and this has to be used judiciously only for studying and intepreting the underlying scheme of Dasa. Study of the Vimshottari Dasa with this Nakshatra we base the association of Saturn with the Karakas (significations) of Saturn which includes and not limited to:

Grandparents/ Elders in General, Research, Lower Strata In Society, Lifespan, Sorrow, Grief, Longevity, Weapons, Travels, Fetters, Servitude (With Or Without Discretionary Powers For Native), Imprisonment, Service, Slavery, Rheumatism, Inferior Deeds And

Key Points

"Anuradha’s symbol is a “Lotus”and a “Staff”. The Lotus can grow in muddy and marshy regions, indicating the environment surrounding the Anuradha. Also, the Lotus points towards the regenerative quality that is latent in the native and reflects the ability and perseverance to blossom during life’s trials and tribulations. In fact, Laxmi (Goddess of Prosperity and Wealth) and Saraswathi (Goddess of Learning and Music) are seen sitting on a Lotus, which shows the relationship of Anuradha to learning, retention and prosperity.

The Staff is a symbol of power, strength, courage and protection. It was usually used by the Sages and Rishis to hold the powers of their penance and usually kept along for self-defence.

A 'triumphant gateway adorned with leaves' is another alternative symbol of this nakshatra. This is a representation of victory and easy success that an Anuradha native enjoys in his pursuit of achieving his desires and goals.

It is an Mridu (soft, tender, mild) nakshatra, in the same token as its symbol “A Lotus” that is a soft and tender flower with a mild scent. Similarly, the native isn’t a forceful warrior but a gentle lover.

The deity of Anuradha is Mitra, the benevolent form of the Sun God imparting compassion, devotion, and love. Anuradha can create and maintain friendships while remaining quite fixed to its aspirations and goals. In the ancient scriptures Mitra is has always been associated and invoked along with either Varuna (the ruling deity of Shatabisha) or Aryaman (the ruling deity of Uttara Phalguni). One can easily deduce from the above that Anuradha is most friendly with these two nakshatras.

The Radhana Shakti, imparts Anuradha the power of “Worship”. Being a passive nakshatra, Anuradha creates a balance in relationships by honouring others as well as themselves

The ruling planet of the nakshatra is Saturn, which reveals the spiritual challenges to be faced in this asterism. Saturn makes Anuradha serious about life in general.Anuradha falls completely in the sign of Scorpio, which is ruled by Mars. The Mars impulse in Anuradha creates an individual of great courage and shows their love for travel from one place to another.

The primary motivation of Anuradha is Dharma (Righteousness) and the natives achieve fame and recognition through friendly cooperation with other people

The animal symbol of Anurdha is the Male Deer which is the mount of Soma (Moon). The Deer usually represents the Moon or Mind which signifies the thoughts which are swift, fast and always on the run like the Deer. Lord Shiva sits on the skin of a spotted Deer and can control the wayward mind and instill the Tamasic Guna of Anuradha. The Tamasic nature also comes about due to its relationship with two tamasic planets Mars and Saturn. The levelling tendencies come to Anuradha from balancing the opposing tamasic energies of the Mars and Saturn.

Anuradha also shows it association with the Agni (Fire) element. This relationship is primarily attributed to the fiery planet Mars, which makes the native warm and approachable.

Anuradha relates to all the electrical and astral fires within our body. The astral fires are carried by the three Channels Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. Hence Pitta dosha is associated with Anuradha.

Since Anuradha is concerned with learning and accumulation of knowledge, Saraswathi, the goddess of learning, can be said to be strongly connected to this nakshatra. This is the only way one can explain the musical prowess of this nakshatra.

Anuradha individuals have the great ability to gather people together for social and spiritual activities. It shows the organisational skills inherent within this nakshatra. Also, since Saturn is the ruling planet, it gives tenacity and discipline.

The ability of Anuradha to combine logic, intuition and freedom of thought produces deep thinkers in fields such as occult, astrology, numerology, statistics or mathematics.

Marriage and start of any auspicious activities is not recommended in Anuradha.

Stories about Anuradha Nakshatra

The Story of Meera and Krishna

Anuradha Nakshatra is all about “Devotion” or “Bhakti”. Usually we relate the unconditional love of Radha for Sri Krishna to this Nakshatra. There was another saint in India – Meera who was also a mystic poet! The blindfolded love she had for Krishna is the perfect example of how love transforms itself to devotion which leads to self realization! “Love can become devotion. Love is the first step; only then can devotion flower. If your love grows deeper, the other becomes more and more significant – so significant that you begin to call the other your god. That is why Meera goes on calling Krishna, God. No one can see Krishna, and Meera cannot prove that Krishna is there, but she is not interested in proving it at all. And remember, whether you make a real person your love object or whether it is just your imagination, it makes no difference, because the whole transformation comes through devotion, not through the beloved – remember this. Krishna may not be there at all; it is irrelevant. For the lover, it is irrelevant.

For Radha, Krishna was there in reality. For Meera, Krishna was not there in reality. That is why Meera is a greater devotee than Radha. For Meera, Krishna is everything and all. She cannot prove it; it is irrational. But she took a jump and she became transformed.Devotion freed her. This feeling that Krishna is there, this total feeling of love, this total surrender, this losing oneself into one who may be or may not be, this losing itself is the transformation. Suddenly one is purified – totally purified – because when the ego is not there you cannot be impure in any way. Because ego is the seed of all impurity. The feeling of ego is the root of all madness. For the feeling world, for the world of the devotee, ego is the disease. Ego dissolves, and it dissolves in only one way; there is no other way. There is only one way: the other becomes so important, so significant, that by and by you fade out and disappear. One day you are no more; just a consciousness of the other remains. ” – Osho

Important themes

"Anuradha is ruled by the deity Mitra who is the lord of friendship and was know for keeping his word. Likewise, Anuradha natives have similar traits in them if strong or dominant planets are placed here. They would be the ones who will be keeping their commitments and will expect the others to do the same. Hence the Anuradha types could be reliable and natural friends.

Anuradha natives are very goal oriented and focused. However, unlike Vishakha which gets achieves its goals through sheer will and power, the Anuradha type will accomplish through the network of friends and alliances. But like Vishakha, they are willing to go any length to get their job finished. They can become wrathful if their goals are not attained and this can keep them irritable.

Since Mitra is always accompanied by Varuna in all his endeavours, it is commonly seen that the Anuradha native are comfortable and prefer working with a partner in life. They are more comfortable being married than being single.

This nakshatra natives can also have a tendency to be perfectionists in the activities they do and expect the same from their colleagues and co-workers.

Their actions are purposeful and ambitions. In the case of failures, they are good to hide their displeasure, accept the defeat gracefully, but harbour revengeful nature to get back at a latter date to fight the battle.

Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha natives face from Ego issues but differently. While Vishakha and Jyeshtha can be verbal in their demonstration of Ego, Anuradha can disguise their Ego level and put up a straight face. They seem to look like the one who is following the rule book, but this will be otherwise. For example, they would the kind of people looking for loop holes in the taxation system to evade taxes and when confronted can show that this wasn’t mentioned in the law book thus justifying their actions. They dislike disputes and violence.Other qualities that are associated with this nakshatra are wealth, travel, living far away from their places of birth and wandering and making lot of friends, acquaintances and alliances during journeys.”
