Chitra is ruled by Tvashtar, the Cosmic craftsman. Its power is the ability to accumulate merit in life (punya cayani shakti). Its basis above is the law. Its basis below is the truth. Through these, the worker is able to gain honor in his work.

Chitra allows us to gain the fruit of our good karma that comes through righteousness. It has a highly spiritual energy and effect. Tvashtar creates enduring forms, like a blacksmith, and also produces variety and abundance. He rules over all arts and crafts. Dharmic principles applied in action are shown here.

Chitra grants manifold progeny or great creativity.
Twashtar desired, “May I gain a wonderful progeny.” One who makes the appropriate offering to Twashtar, to Chitra ( 23 20 Virgo to 06 40 Libra). , gains a wonderful progeny. The creator of Astro*Carto*Graphy, Jim Lewis, had his natal Moon placed here. Chitra natives are often successful artisan types. The shakti is “the ability to accumulate merit in this life”. Chitra has a rakshasa temperament with a primary motivation of kama, or desire. Chitra Nakshatra - Ruled by Mars

Chitra Nakshatra in the Vimshottari Nakshatra Dasa (120 Year Cycle of Timing of Events) system introduced by Rishi Parashara is associated with planet Mars. This association with Mars is only relevant with the Vimshottari based Nakshatra Dasa system and Mars doesn't rule this Nakshatra as is believed and understood misinterpreted in many of the later texts on Nakshatras. The Nakshatras are ruled by the Devatas (Tutelary Archetypes or Principal Dieites). Other Nakshatra based dasa systems given by Rishis Parashara have been associated with other planets that influence this nakshatra and this has to be used judiciously only for studying and interpreting the underlying scheme of Dasa. Study of the Vimshottari Dasa with this Nakshatra we base the association of Mars with the Karakas (significations) of Mars which includes and not limited to: Army, Siblings, Land, Property, House, Surgery, Husband, Truth, Land And Fort, Diseases, Wounds/Ulcer, Valour, Fighting Equipments Or Arms, Fire, Dignity, Higher Knowledge, Brothers,

Mars is also associated with Lord Narasimha (Man-Lion) amongst the Dasa Avataars (10 Incarnations) of Vishnu. Mars is also been reffered to as Angaraka, Bhauma, Chevaai, Kuja.

Key Points

The deity of this nakshatra is Tvastar who as per Purusha Sukta is the first born creator of the Universe. He is supposedly the visible form of creativity to come from the navel of Vishwakarma (The Celestial Architect). In the Rid Veda, Tvastar is believed to belong to the clan of Bhrighus and is invoked when desiring offsprings as is called “Garbha Pati” or “Lord of the Womb”. He is considered to be the son of Guru Sukracharya (Lord of Venus and Mentor of the Demons). He is father of Saranyu (also called Saranya, Sanjna, Sangya) who is the wife of

Vivasat (Lord Surya) and mother of Yama and Yami, sometimes identified as the fifirst Humans.

Tvastar is also the father of Viswarupa or Trishira (The Three headed Asura) who was vanquished by Indra, and in revenge Tvastar created the Vritra the fearsome dragon.

In some accounts in the Puranas, Tvastar and Vishwakarma have been interchangeable refered and it is believed the ancient vedic seers saw this nakshatra as the residence of Vishwakarma (or Tvastar; the visible creative energy of Vishwakarma), the divine architect. Tvastar, the celestial architect, is the main ruling deity of this nakshatra. He is the son of Prabhasa, one of the Asta Vasus. His mother is Varastri, the sister of the Brihaspati (the Priest of the

Gods). He is said to be adept in Maya, the illusory force which keeps alive the drama of life. Vishwakarma, uses his knowledge of Maya to create, mutate and fashion new forms out of the pre-existing ones, an act which seems like magic to others. His workings are often done in secret and shroud of mystery surrounds him

To understand his mysterious aspect better, we have to take our present day example, “most of us are completely unaware how normal soil containing silicon is transformed into a computer, a device which has the ability to do all these magic-like functions”. In the same way, most of us do not have the clue as to how Vishwakarma creates magnificent structures using the most basic elements. That is why none can surpass Chitra as far as arts, crafts, design, architecture, and beauty are concerned. He is the master of maya and magic,

and represents regenerative power and longevity

Vishwakarma, even though he is friendly to the gods, has no particular

allegiance to anyone. He creates all Lokas (planes of existence) for all (human, godly, serpent, etc). It is Vishwakarma who fashions thunderbolts for Indra, the king of heavenly hosts, the chalice of Soma, the Trishul and Pinaka Bow of Shiva, the Spear of Karthikeya and the Discus of Vishnu. But his twin brother, Trishiras (three-headed) is a demon and an enemy of Indra. This duality finds

expression through Chitra, a nakshatra which is very ambiguous and thus hard to classify in any fixed category of good, evil, crooked or saintly

The Celestial Physicians and Agriculturists the Ashwini Kumaras are the grandchildren of Visvakarma. He was the the divine architect of the universe. He ritually offered himself to the creation and maintainence of the Universe

Chitra allows us to gain the fruit of our good karma that comes through

righteousness. It has strong spiritual energy and effect. Tvastar creates enduring forms, like a blacksmith, and also produces variety and abundance

Chitra is very beautiful to look at. Viswakarma is the great artist and artificer to the Gods, the lord of practical arts and applied aesthetics. The knowledge and capacity to paint, the gift of narration and well-ordered conversation. From Chitra is derived the painter, specialist in paints, the artist, the musician, the skilful surgeon, the imaginative writer, the specialist in aromatic herbs and dreamer of intricate patterns. The art of construction, the art of engraving, embroidery, frame-making and everything that constitutes an artistic complex

from fifine embroidery to the Taj Mahal and on the other hand industrial engineering and skill and the organisation of machinery and plants – everything is caused or influenced by Chitra

It would suffice to say that Mars is the powerhouse which runs Chitra’s factory. The Martian energy doesn’t express itself in its natural confrontational way through Chitra as it is sublimated by Venus, the Secondary ruler of this asterism. Venus is often regarded as the soul opposite of Mars. This view is only partially correct as Mars & Venus are complimentary to each other more than anything else. Together they are responsible for the reproductive process in nature. This

gives us a clue as to where Chitra’s creativity originates from. Venus refines the raw Martian impulses. Chitra can thus be seen as the refinement-meter of the soul. Mars-Venus together promotes sexuality, making Chitra one of the most sexually alluring and active amongst nakshatras

The high magnitude fixed star Spica (Alpha Virginis), one of the brightest stars in the wheat ear of Virgo, this is one of the most auspicious stars of all denoting success, riches, and a love of the sciences and arts

This is the “Star of Opportunity”. These individuals posses charisma, personal charm, and can be flashy and glamorous. They love bright colors and usually have very beautiful eyes with well-proportioned bodies. This is one of the most mystical nakshatras of all. Chitra rules creation, indicating artistic ability, and organizational ability as in architectural design. Many artists are born in this

asterism. With an affinity to jewels they may deal with gemstones. Chitra reflflects the world of maya and delusions, which they are to over come.

Persons born in this star defeats his enemies gallantly, is an expert in politics and has extraordinary intelligence. They enjoy good health and always appear much younger than their actual age. ‘Create’ is keyword for them. Natives with Chitra rising have well-proportioned hairless body, bright lustrous eyes, thin eyebrows, alluring mannerisms and glint in eyes. Chitra is good for auspicious activities like Yoga, Collecting Herbs, Wearing Gem Stones & New Clothes

Mythological Stories about Chitra Nakshatra

The Story of Lord Ayappa

Lord Ayappa also known as Hari Hara Sudhan meaning Son of Hari(Vishnu) and Hara(Shiva).

The demoness Mahishi was burning up with anger at the trick the Gods had pulled on her brother, the asura king Mahishasura. As Mahishasura was blessed with invulnerability to all men, the Gods had sent Goddess Durga, to fight and kill him. Thus, Mahishi began performing a fearsome set of austerities, and pleased the creator God

Brahma. She asked for the boon of invulnerability, but Brahma said it was not possible so Mahishi planned and asked invulnerability to all men except by the son of Shiva and Vishnu (Both are male & no possibility to give birth to any one). He granted her the boon of ruling the universe and being invulnerable except by the son of Shiva and

Vishnu. Since such a person did not exist, she thought she was safe and began conquering and plundering the world. The Gods implored Shiva and Vishnu to save them from this catastrophe. Vishnu found

a possible solution to the problem. When Vishnu had taken on the Kurma Avatar, he also had to manifest himself as Mohini, the enchantress, to save the nectar of immortality (ambrosia or amrit) from the demons who were not willing to share it with the Gods. If he became Mohini again, then the female Mohini and the male Shiva could have the divine child who would combine the powers of Durga as per Brahmand Purana and beat Mahishi. And thus Lord Ayappa was born!

Lord Ayyapa’s human incarnation was “Manikandan”. Baby manikandan was found alone in the pampa forest and the king Raja Rajashekara adopted him. But in the meantime, the queen was pregnant, and now she did not want Manikanda to be the

heir to the royal throne. So she faked a mysterious disease that could be cured only by the milk of a tigress. Manikandan agreed to go to the forest and return with the milk of a tigress for his step mother.

The queen was happy thinking manikandan will be killed in the forest. Days later, Manikandan entered the palace riding a fierce tigress and followed by a pack of its cubs. The king and queen realized now knew that Manikandan was no ordinary being. They were convinced of His divine origins, and prayed to Him to be with them for their

own salvation and for the safety of the kingdom. However, Manikandan was now determined to leave the place. The Lord manikandan told the King that he could construct a temple at Sabarimala, north of the holy river Pampa and install His deity there. Ayyappa also explained how the Sabarimala pilgrimage shall be undertaken, emphasizing the importance of ‘vrutham’ and what the devotees can attain by His ‘darshan’. The chitra nakshatra natives have qualities of both Shiva and Vishnu, yet just like Lord

Ayyappa they might have to experience some parenting issues. Just like how Lord Ayyappa tamed the most difficult tigress, the chitra natives have it in them to tackle their inner demons and become victorious in life.

Tvastr - The Celestial Architect

In the historical Vedic religion, Tva01/ is the artisan god or fashioner. The Purusha Sukta refers to the Purusha as Tvastr, who is the visible form of creativity emerged from the navel of the invisible Vishvakarman. In the Yajurveda, Purusha Sukta and the tenth

The term, also transliterated as Tvastr, nominative Tvastr, is the heavenly builder, the maker of divine implements, especially Indra's Vajra and the guardian of Soma. Tvastr is mentioned 65 times in the 2gveda

As per Rigveda Tvastr known as Rathakara belongs to clan of the Bh/gus. Similarly, as mentioned in the epic Mahabharata, Tvastr or the Rathakara is Sukracarya's son, Sukracarya (the mentor of the asuras) is Bh/gu's grandson and V.ru,ibh/gu's son. He fathered Vritra, as well as the twins Trisiras and Saranyu, with Hiranyakashipu"s

daughter. He is the father of Saranya, who twice bears twins to Vivasvat - Yama and Yami, also identified as the first humans. He is also the father of Vi 4var5pa or Tri4iras who was killed by Indra, in revenge Tvastr created Vrtra a fearsome dragon.

Tvastr is a solar deity in the Mahabharata and the Harivamsa. He is mentioned as the son of Kashyapa and Aditi and is said to have made the three worlds with pieces of the

Sun god, Surya.
