Uttara Phalguni nakshatra (Uttara)

Uttara Phalguni nakshatra is associated with Ekakshara Ganapati.

Significance of Ekakshara Ganapati
Lord Ganapati is regarded as the 17th among the 32 different forms of Ganapati. The word ‘Ekam’ or ‘Eka’ stands for the number, ‘one’ and ‘Akshara’ means ‘the letter.’ Eka Akshara thus indicates a single syllable and represents the Beejakshara, called ‘Gam,’ which is also known as the ‘seed letter.’ Ekakshara Ganapati is thus ‘the Lord of the single-letter’ and symbolizes this sacred, single syllable, Beejakshara Mantra, ‘Gam.’ He also denotes the primordial, universal sound, ‘Om.’ Ekakshara Ganapati sits in the majestic Padmasana posture (yogic lotus pose), and is generally depicted as riding his favorite mount, Mushika, the mouse. He is red in complexion, also covered with red silk, and has three eyes and a crescent moon in his crown, just like his father, Lord Shiva. He also has four hands. While his main left hand shows Varada Mudra, the boon granting posture, he holds a noose, an elephant goad and a pomegranate fruit in his other three hands.

Blessings of Worshipping Ekakshara Ganapati
Ekakshara Ganapati is a symbol of contemplation. It is hence believed that worshipping this meditative form of the Lord would help the devotees to have control over their minds and also the senses.

In Ekakshara Ganapati form, Lord Ganesha sits in a yogic lotus posture (Padmasana) with four hands riding his Mushika Vahana (Rat). His appearance is in red hue complexion and covered with red silk. Also in this form he is third eyed and with crescent moon on his crown like Lord Shiva. Ekakshara Ganapathi’s left hand shows the Varda Mudra, granting of boons and on his main right hand holds pomegranate. Both his upper left and right hands hold elephant goad and noose.

Uttara Phalguni - Tree

Uttara Phalguni

"Uttara Phalguni in the Vedic order is ruled by Bhaga, the God of happiness, though later it was shifted to Aryaman, the God of contracts and unions. Its power is the giving of prosperity (chayani shakti) through marriage or union. Its basis above is the wealth gained from ones own family. Its basis below is the wealth gained from ones partner. These together bring about the accumulation of wealth.

Uttara Phalguni brings the prosperity that results through union. It indicates both the need for union and for organizing the resources gained through it. Bhaga is also a God of wealth who brings about the right apportionment of resources. While the previous Nakshatra shows marriage, this shows the setting up of the household for the newly married couple. Such agreements extend beyond marriage to any type of union. Establishment of proper resources is a key point here."
Aryaman desired, “May I become the lord of the animals.” One who makes the appropriate offering to Aryaman, to the Utttara Phalguni (26 40 Leo to 10 00 Virgo), he becomes the lord of the animals. Those born under Uttara Phalguni seek colleagues and followers in order to help them in their causes, which are generally noble in nature (at least to them). Aryaman governs over contracts, agreements, help and service.
"The symbol for this service oriented lunar mansion is a healing bed or two legs of a cot. This is the “social worker” nakshatra who is always helping the friend in need. They possess great skills in the healing arts and counseling fields. These natives have a manushya or human temperament, while their primary motivation is moksha or spiritual liberation. The deity is Aryaman, the God of Patronage and son of Aditi, the Cosmic Mother. The shakti associated with this asterism is “the power of giving prosperity thru marriage”. The ruling planet is the Sun and reflects the ability to shine their healing light on those with whom they come into contact.

Uttara Phalguni Career Interests:
Social workers, philanthropists, charitable work.
Healing arts, state health officials.
Writers, actors and media personalities.
Astrologers, astronomers and mathematicians.
Sales and public relations, business minded people, successful.

Uttara Phalaguni is formed by two stars at the tail of the Lion.

“Straight be the paths and thornless on which friends will travel to present our suit. May Aryaman and Bhaga lead us together! May heaven grant us a stable marriage! Rig Veda X.85.23"
Friendship is important to these helpful, kind individuals. They are happiest when married. Relationships and family unity are important. The meanings of Purva Phalguni apply here as well, just a little subdued. It is called the “Star of Patronage” for their love of humanity and caring sincere nature. They want to alleviate the suffering in society. Basically the Phalguni’s are known to have a happy marriage. But, since this nakshatra cannot stand to be alone, they may settle for anybody, and become involved in a co-dependent relationship, leading to resentments and marriage problems. They are courageous and good with people, leading them into powerful positions. There is a tendency to be controlling and very stubborn.

Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra - Ruled by Sun

Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra in the Vimshottari Nakshatra Dasa (120 Year Cycle of Timing

of Events) system introduced by Rishi Parashara is associated with planet Sun. This

association with Sun is only relevant with the Vimshottari based Nakshatra Dasa

system and Sun doesn't rule this Nakshatra as is believed and understood

misintepreted in many of the later texts on Nakshatras. The Nakshatras are ruled by the

Devatas (Tutelary Archetypes or Principal Dieites). Other Nakshatra based dasa

systems given by Rishis Parashara have been associated with other planets that

inflfluence this nakshatra and this has to be used judiciously only for studying and

intepreting the underlying scheme of Dasa.

Study of the Vimshottari Dasa with this Nakshatra we base the association of Sun with

the Karakas (significations) of Sun which includes and not limited to: Father, Elder

Brother after Father, Position in Society, Ruling Party, King, Promotion, Showing-o#,

Soul, Enemy, Incentive, Push, Forests, Peaks, Mountains, Happiness from Father,

Authority Wielded by The Native, Religious Sacrifice/ Inclinations, Gold, Horse, Topaz,

Status/ Position Occupied by the Native, Blood, White Umbrella, Denoting Honour,

Copper, Grass, Medicine, Red Leprosy, Valour, Eyes, Medical Treatment.

Sun is also associated with Lord Sri Ram amongst the Dasa Avataars (10 Incarnations)

of Vishnu. Sun is also been referred to as Aditya, Arka, Bhanu, Bhaskara, Dinakar, Ravi,

Martanda, Vivasvata.

Key Points

'The word ‘Phal’ means fruit and’Guni’ is related to the good qualities or nature.

So, the word Phalguni translates as the ‘One enjoying the fruits of his good

qualities’. Hence this nakshatra has the ability to fulfifil the materialistic desires of

the native

Aryaman is seen as a deity presiding over patronage, favours and kindness.

Therefore, the key motivation of this nakshatra is towards helping or receiving

help from others. As such, natives born here are very cultured, social and

civilized. They are also very concerned about etiquettes, hospitality, kindness

and social graces. Aryaman is also seen as deity who places strong emphasis

on friendship. In Vedic rituals, he is always involved in a pair, either with Bhaga

(the ruling deity of Purva Phalguni), or with Mitra (the presiding deity of

Anuradha)

Aryaman and Bhaga are invoked together during the Vedic Marriage ritual. Shiva

and Parvati were married under this asterism

Like Sun, this lunar mansion is straight forward, and unhesitating in its dealings

Uttara Phalguni is considered a balanced nakshatra. Its balancing quality is

pretty evident from the nature of its ruling deity Aryaman. One needs to have a

balanced personality to have social graces, kindness, compassion and

friendliness towards other living beings. In a way, it mirrors Libra (fairness) when

it comes to all that is encompassed by the term “balance”

This lunar mansion falls in the Kshatriya (ruling/warrior) class because its

qualities derived from the association with the Kshatriya planet Sun

It’s a Female nakshatra. This is a perplexing classification considering that both

its ruling planet and ruling deities are Male. Maybe of the female attributes that it

has, such as grace, kindness, benevolence, consideration & receptivity resulted

it to be classified a female nakshatra

This nakshatra is like Purva Phalguni in many ways just as the symbolism

suggests. In fact, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni form a pair, the fifirst in the

sequence of nakshatras. They share similar names, symbolism, nature and

quality although with slight deference. The only deference is that generosity,

kindness, patronage and an eagerness to help the distressed, to help

friends and intimates and those who seek help are more pronounced in this star

Sun is the planetary ruler of this nakshatra. The solar aspect of nature comes

into manifestation in the earlier nakshatra, Krittika. Uttara Phalguni relates to the

process where the solar principle a#ects and organizes the material world, just

like Sun’s rays can cook food in a solar cooker. The primordial solar principle

manifests as will power in Krittika, but it takes the form of intelligence in Uttara

Phalguni, with the aid of Mercury (Sign Lord of Virgo)

Persons born in this are charitable, kind-hearted, straight-forward, very

ambitious, likes to lead a princely life, fitful temper, observes family traditions,

sinless. Uttara Phalguni is best for laying foundations, favorable for sexual

activity, marriage, wearing new clothes and jewellery

These natives would confront quiet a difficult period till the age of 32 years while

it would turn somehow and grows slowly till the age of 38 years and after that

they would confront stable growth till the age of 62 years. These people would

earn most of their affluence during their period of 50’s

' Inflfluences: Kind hearted persons, those pure in conduct, modest, heretics,

charitable persons and the learned, very rich people, and those who are devoted

to their duties, kings

' Moon in Uttara Phalguni: The person is beautiful and lovely, earns money by

his literary merits, will be happy and an enjoyer of the senses

' Per Varahamihira, those born with Moon in Uttara Phalguni “Earn through their

knowledge, are well liked and popular and live a life of comfort and luxury”.

Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra mentions from the Scriptures

“Uttara Phalguni signififies kind-hearted persons, the pure in conduct, modest, heretics,

charitable persons and the learned, fifine-corn (like the Kalama rice), very rich men, those

who are devouted to their duties, and kings.”

- Brihat Samhita by Varahamihira (Chapter XV, Stellar Rulership)

“If in Uttara Phalguni he will be voluptuous, with a lofty sense of honour, grateful and

intelligent”

- Jataka Parijata, Nakshatra Palam (Adh. IX, Sloka 84-90)

“Healing and Disease Treatment”.

- Muhurta Chintamani

liberal mind, have luxuries and will be talkative.”

procession. Similary they are involved in the festivities of the Grand wedding between

Siva and Sati.

Nandi is the Sacred Animal of Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra.

People born in this nakshatra are social workers always ready to serve a higher

purpose. Aryama is the deity associated with this nakshatra, and he is known for his

leadership qualities and his ability to help people.

Nandi is the guardian and vahana (mount or vehicle) of Lord Shiva and he is always in

front of the Shiva Temples. Devotees pray to Nandi fifirst to get his permission to visit

Lord Shiva in temples.

The Story of Nandi

The word “Nandi” is derived from the ancient Indian Language of Sanskrit. The Sanskrit

word ‘Nandi’ in English translates as Happy, Joyous or Happy Person. Another theory

is the word Nandi is derived from Tamil word “nandu” meaning bull. Ancient Tamilians

considered the bull a sign of masculinity and valour.

There was a sage named Shilada who underwent severe penance to have a boon — a

child with immortality. Lord Indra pleased of the austerities of Shilada appeared in front

of him to o#er a boon. After hearing the request of Shilada and his desire to have an

immortal child, Lord Indra suggested he pray to Lord Shiva: nobody else could provide

such a boon. Sage Shilada continued his penance for 1,000 years. He was totally

immovable for many years, so the termites settled on his body and slowly started to

build up their nest. Finally, his whole body was covered up by them. The insects

started to eat his flflesh and imbibed his blood. At last, only bones remained.

Lord Shiva appeared in front of him and provided the boon for the child. Moreover,

Lord Shiva provided Sage Shilada his old form with a single touch. Sage Shilada

performed Yagna and a child appeared from the sacrifificial fifire. His body was clad in

armour made out of diamonds. The celestial dancers and singers performed on this

auspicious occasion and the deities showered flflowers on the child. The boy was

named ’Nandi’ — who brings joy. Shilada brought the child home. Immediately the boy

lost his divine appearance to an ordinary child. The child completely forgot all about his

birth. Sage Shilada was worried about the sudden change. He devoted his time for

Nandi’s upbringing his education etc. By the age of seven, the boy was well versed in

Veda and all sacred texts.

One day the deities Mitra and Varuna visited Sage Shilada. At the fifirst sight of the boy,

they commented: Though the boy had all auspicious signs, he would have a very short

life. He would not live after the age of eight. Sage Shilada was mortifified at this remark.

Nandi could not bear his father’s sorrow; he began to pray to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva

appeared before him and blessed him. Lord Shiva adorned the boy with a necklace

and made him immortal. Lord Shiva blessed the child and declared that he would be

worshiped along with Him and become his vahana (vehicle). Immediately the boy got

all the divine powers and transformed into half bull-half human.
